Note: This applies to DocuShare 6.6.x, 7.0 and 7.5.
Content Encryption enhances site security by providing automatic content encryption of all uploaded documents. Content Encryption encrypts all documents uploaded to the site. Documents uploaded and stored on the site before you enabled Content Encryption, remain unencrypted.
Note: The level of encryption employed by this add-on requires Xerox/DocuShare to register each Content Encryption add-on customer with the US federal government.
Content Encryption setup
To setup and configure your site to use Content Encryption:
1. Purchase Content Encryption license from DocuShare Sales and apply the license.
Note: If you require Content Encryption add do not have it, the DocuShare Sales Team will need to be contacted at 1-800-735-7749.
2. Install the Content Encryption Add-On Software.
Note: Once the encryption module has been purchased a download path will be provided and sufficient access permission to download the encryption module will be provided. Follow the Content Encryption add-on software installation wizard to load the necessary files onto your DocuShare Server.
To Install Content Encryption:
Extract the contents of the archive file to a temporary directory.
Run dsUpdate found in the \platform\\DocuShare directory, where is the DocuShare server operating system; Linux, Solaris, or Windows.
Follow the onscreen prompts to complete the installation.
3. Enable Content Encryption.
Note: A valid license key is required to enable DocuShare Content Encryption. Be sure your site is licensed for Content Encryption before proceeding.
Log into DocuShare as admin.
Select Admin Home | Site Management | Site Configuration.
From the Site Configuration window, next to Enable Content Encryption select Yes.
Click Apply.
Note: To confirm that it is enabled you can view the \config\ContentStore.xml file. Look for the entry true
Where is replaced with the installation directory for DocuShare. The default installation path is C:\Xerox\Docushare. Depending on your installation environment the path may vary.
Note: There is also an Enable Content Encryption setting that in Admin Home | Content Management | Content Store Configuration. This setting should automatically be enabled when you enable the setting on the Site Configuration page.
4. Verify that the Encryption is working.
Once all the steps above have been completed, upload a file.
Locate the file you uploaded in the repository and make a copy of the file and place in a temporary location.
Rename the copy with the native file extension.
Attempt to open the file with the native application.
If Content Encryption is enabled and working the uploaded file should fail.
Warning: After encryption is enabled newly uploaded files are stored in DocuShare encrypted. Files stored in DocuShare before enabling encryption are not encrypted.
Newly uploaded versions to unencrypted files will be encrypted.
IMPORTANT: Once Content Encryption is enabled documents can only be unencrypted by downloading the files from DocuShare. There are no external utilities or keys available to unencrypt files stored in the DocuShare document repository (DSHOME/documents).
Warning: The Content Encryption add-on does not encrypt the search index. Content indexing will be disabled by default when Content Encryption is enabled. Go to Admin Home | Services and Components | Index to enable Content Indexing. Also consider controlling content indexing by document file type using the MIME Types table. If content indexing is change from true to false, a dsindex index_all will be required to reindex the site so content indexing is not included.
Warning: If encryption is disabled, any documents uploaded after it is disabled are not encrypted but Documents uploaded while it was enabled will remain encrypted.
