How To Install Updates, Patches and Hotfixes

Before you begin:  You must be a DocuShare administrator and have a maintenance window available. The installation stops DocuShare services. Confirm that the update is intended for your exact DocuShare release and patch level before starting.

 

Prerequisites

  • Download the update, patch, or hotfix from the applicable Xerox DocuShare download location.
  • Read the documentation supplied with the update before beginning the installation.
  • Confirm the current DocuShare version from About DocuShare on the site home page or Administration menu.
  • Confirm that the update is compatible with the installed DocuShare release and operating system.
  • Back up the DocuShare database, documents, configuration, and license information according to the applicable backup procedure.
  • Stop DocuShare or place it in Read Only mode while the database and documents are being backed up at the same time so the two backups remain synchronized.
  • Make sure the backup completed successfully and keep it until the update has been validated.

First: Identify Your Installation Type

A standalone update, patch, or hotfix changes an existing DocuShare installation. A major-version upgrade changes the DocuShare release and may require intermediate releases or patches. Use only the procedure that matches your planned change.

DocuShare 8.0 Major Upgrade Paths

The installation steps later in this article are not a complete major-upgrade procedure. If you are upgrading to DocuShare 8.0, first follow the required path for your current release, then use the published 8.0 upgrade instructions for the applicable in-place or new-server scenario. Do not skip an intermediate release or patch.

Path warning:  DocuShare 7.5 Patch 2 must first be upgraded to DocuShare 7.7, then DocuShare 7.7 Patch 1, and then DocuShare 8.0. Do not attempt a direct 7.5-to-8.0 upgrade.

 

Standalone Update, Patch, or Hotfix Installation

Scope of the next steps:  The Windows and Linux procedures below apply to installing a standalone update, patch, or hotfix on an existing DocuShare release. They are not a substitute for the DocuShare 8.0 major-upgrade procedure.

 

The Windows and Linux procedures below are for standalone update, patch, or hotfix installation only. They are not a substitute for the DocuShare 8.0 major-upgrade procedure.

Windows Procedure

  1. Log in to the DocuShare server using an account with Windows administrator permissions.
  2. Stop DocuShare services.
  3. Extract the complete update archive to a local directory on the DocuShare server.
  4. Open the extracted directory, right-click dsUpdate.exe, and select Run as Administrator.
  5. Wait for the installer to load, then follow the instructions in the installation wizard.
  6. When prompted to select an update, select the update that matches your DocuShare release and click Next.
  7. If the update is not listed, use Add Update to browse to the corresponding update JAR file, then select the update.
  8. When installation completes, click Finish.
  9. Start DocuShare and wait for all services to become available.

Linux Procedure

For Linux, follow the installation procedure and commands supplied with the specific update package. Do not use the Windows dsUpdate.exe procedure on Linux. Confirm the required service account, file permissions, environment variables, and service stop/start commands in the release documentation before installing.

  • Extract the complete archive on the DocuShare server.
  • Stop DocuShare using the supported service procedure for your installation.
  • Run the supplied update utility or command as the DocuShare installation owner, unless the release documentation specifies otherwise.
  • Start DocuShare using the supported service procedure after the update completes.

After Installation

  1. Open About DocuShare from the site home page or Administration menu and confirm that the expected update or patch is listed.
  2. Confirm that all DocuShare services start without errors.
  3. Test administrator login, document access, document download, and search.
  4. Verify that the database connection, scheduled jobs, add-ons, integrations, and custom configuration operate as expected.
  5. Review the DocuShare logs and the update log for migration, startup, or configuration errors.
  6. Keep the backup and installation files until the validation period is complete.

Installing Multiple Updates

Install updates in the order specified by the release documentation. Restart DocuShare after each update when required by that documentation. Do not install multiple updates in succession unless the applicable release instructions explicitly support that sequence.

Custom Configuration and Add-Ons

  • Review custom server.xml, connector, TLS, valve, reverse-proxy, or web-server settings after installation.
  • Confirm that supported add-ons and third-party enablers are compatible with the target DocuShare release.
  • If the site contains custom integrations or unsupported modifications, contact DocuShare Support before applying the update.

Troubleshooting

  • If the update does not appear in the installer, confirm that the archive was completely extracted and that the update JAR matches the installed release.
  • If DocuShare does not start, review the service and application logs before retrying the installation.
  • If search or document access fails after installation, verify that the database, search service, and DocuShare services are running.
  • Do not repeatedly retry a failed upgrade. Record the current version, target update, operating system, installation stage, error message, and relevant logs.
