WebDAV will continue to function only on currently supported DocuShare versions until the stated support end date and will be fully removed beginning with DocuShare 8.1.
What This Means for You
- WebDAV support in DocuShare has reached End-of-Life.
- The WebDAV connection option will not be included in DocuShare 8.1 or later versions.
- Existing WebDAV configurations will stop functioning upon upgrade to DocuShare 8.1.
- Microsoft WebClient, the underlying dependency for WebDAV, was deprecated by Microsoft in November 2023 and is no longer supported.
- Technical support for WebDAV-related issues will be limited on current versions and will end on September 30, 2026.
Why We Made This Decision
The DocuShare WebDAV feature relies on the Microsoft WebClient service, which Microsoft deprecated in November 2023. As Microsoft WebClient is no longer supported or maintained by Microsoft, continuing to provide a reliable and secure WebDAV connection experience is not feasible. This change is necessary to ensure DocuShare remains on a modern, secure, and fully supported technology stack.
Who is Affected
This change affects customers using WebDAV for mapped drives or external file-system access to DocuShare content.
Recommended Alternatives
DocuShare offers several modern alternatives to WebDAV that provide equivalent or improved capabilities for accessing and managing your content. Depending on your use case-end-user access, bulk content handling, or programmatic integration-DocuShare provides the following modern alternatives:
File Drag and Drop
DocuShare now supports drag-and-drop file and folder management directly in the web interface, allowing users to easily upload and organize content without requiring a mapped drive or desktop client.
Zip and Download
Users can download multiple files and entire collections as a ZIP archive directly from the DocuShare web interface, making bulk content retrieval simple and efficient without a persistent connection.
DocuShare API
The DocuShare HTTP XML API and web services layer provide a powerful, programmatic interface for integrating DocuShare content with external systems and custom workflows. This is the recommended option for customers who require automated or application-level access to DocuShare content.
MCP (Model Context Protocol)
In DocuShare 8.1, DocuShare will support MCP (Model Context Protocol), enabling modern AI-assisted and application-driven integrations with DocuShare content. MCP provides a flexible, standards-based approach for connecting tools and services to your DocuShare environment.
Next Steps
We recommend that customers begin evaluating the alternative options listed above and plan their transition away from WebDAV ahead of the DocuShare 8.1 release.
